BookSparks Speaks Out 2019
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, BookSparks has teamed up with author Jamie Beck to launch our 7th annual BookSparks Speaks Out Campaign: Pink Spines 2019. All month-long in October, BookSparks fans are urged to purchase a copy of Jamie Beck’s new release The Wonder of Now and share their #PinkSpines2019 book photos sharing all the pink books in their collection. BookSparks will make a donation to the BCRF for every book receipt submitted. In addition, BookSparks is accepting nominations for our Breast Cancer Warrior Care Package program. Each week, BookSparks will select two women currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer to receive a care package designed to make their experience a little more comfortable.
She Writes Press and SparkPress Toward Equality in Publishing (STEP) Scholarship 2019
She Writes Press launched the STEP contest in 2018 to address the lack of diversity in the publishing landscape. In 2019 two winners received a publishing package (plus a 500-book print run) to publish on either She Writes Press or SparkPress. The winners were Robin Farmer and Veena Rao. The mission behind the STEP program is to recognize and publish those voices that are not otherwise being heard due to a variety of constraints that exist, be they cultural, social, or financial.
Full Shelves Full Hearts 2019
As part of our 10th anniversary Summer Reading Challenge, BookSparks launched a coordinated classroom library and supplies drive called Full Shelves Full Hearts, in partnership with Teach Your Heart Out, to help teachers fill their shelves for the upcoming school year. As part of this campaign, teachers from across the country nominated their classrooms to be featured, and BookSparks selected 10 classrooms in need to highlight during the campaign. Each teacher’s public wish list of supplies was shared throughout the summer by both BookSparks and a team of influencers and friends and strangers alike purchased supplies from the lists to help stock these classrooms. As part of our partnership with Teach Your Heart Out, each featured teacher also received a complimentary ticket to an upcoming TYHO conference of their choice.
She Writes Press Toward Equality in Publishing (STEP) Scholarship 2018
The publishing industry has been widely criticized for its lack of diversity. In an effort to address this issue head-on we launched the She Writes Press Toward Equality in Publishing (STEP) contest in 2018 to offer a publishing package (plus a 500-book print run) to publish on She Writes Press. The purpose of this contest is to support inclusivity across our own lists, and to fortify our own mission to give voice to women writers. The 2018 STEP winner, Bobi Gentry Goodwin, received a publishing deal to publish with She Writes Press, which includes the full services of the She Writes Press Publishing Package (valued at $7500).
BookSparks Speaks Out 2018
BookSparks is committed to using our influence as a leader in the literary community to make a positive impact. Each year we make it a priority to partner with a charity and author and put our words to good use. In 2018 we partnered with two authors. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we teamed up with Georgia Clark, author of The Bucket List, and the FORCE organization to make a difference in the lives of those affected by hereditary cancer. And we partnered with Nancy Richardson Fischer, author of When Elephants Fly, and the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Kenya to help feed an elephant calf for a year and celebrate the work the female elephant keepers do there.
Giving Tuesday 2017
